Jimmi Mayes, 71, a Jackson native who makes his home in Chicago, has enjoyed a year career playing drums for some of the biggest names in American music. After discovering his talent as a high school sophomore, he began playing in juke joints and notable night spots in Jackson. When he graduated from Jim Hill High School in , Mayes hit the road for a lifelong trip that began in Chicago and took him around the country and beyond.

This two-hour production features Rudy Mayes with an all-star band, a lead female vocalist plus four solo and back-up singers.

His career spanned decades that saw changes in not only the music business, but in the society around him, as desegregation and a revolution in cultural standards took hold. When I was growing up in Jackson, I was the third of four children. I had two older sisters, Charlotte and Laverne, and a younger brother, Chester. Today I have three boys. They are 47, 27 and 16, and they all live in Chicago.

We walked to school together, played together on Saturday, went to Sunday school and church together on Sunday. Like most kids then, I was born at home, at our house on West Pascagoula Street.
