John Knowles, the son of Richard and Ruth Bower Knowles , was likely born about at Plymouth where his parents then resided. His father was a ship master who lived first at Plymouth, perhaps spent a short time in Cambridge, and later settled permanently at Eastham. John and Ephraim Doane were also charged in an investigation into the death of Josiah, the Indian Sachem at Eastham, but the matter was dropped.
